There is a Season
For everything there is a season…
If you have followed along with me for a while you know how much I love to observe nature as a way to divine spiritual insight. And the seasons with their colors and signatures of expression are such a deep insight in to the expressions of life.
We as human are a part of nature. We are the funny part who likes to think herself separate. But we are not.
When we honor seasons within us we can, in fact, create a greater capacity to flourish.
At this point in the season, influencers and internet therapists alike are telling you that it is, in fact, winter, and it’s normal and fine to rest. They are indeed correct. But yet, the world spins madly on. Parties are hosting, marshmallows are roasting… you know how it goes. So when we tell ourselves to rest but do not actually have the time, we create resistance with in us.
So how do we truly embrace this season?
We must honor our own personal season of life. Are you personally in a place where socializing is joyful? Are you actually on the brink of becoming a hermit in the woods forever? Maybe you have decorated every room of your house or maybe you have been singing “where are you Christmas” at the top of your lungs and tears in your eyes? Perhaps your in the place where you not really sure why we must “holiday” at all.
None of these places are wrong or invalid. So embrace where your at. Start by coming to a place of non resistance about your own season. Let go of FOMO. Its okay to miss out if your not in the place for it. Its also okay to be so jolly because, life is meant to be lived and there can be a magic to this season.
When we start to embrace the season we are in, and see how that responds to the season we are all in, we can begin to truly honor our innate flow. Because like nature, the seasons mean different things to different species.
For some plants a hard winter freeze is just the trick to get it to be fruitful, for others it will perish. Winter isnt the same for all beings. And what if the way you are showing up for this season could be the perfect role for you to play?
I know some of you have children and family to think about and you may say that showing up burnt out is not acceptable. Or that canceling the holidays would definitely be something others felt they missed out on. But that role is also part of your season. You both need to honor your desires and your desires to be the person you want in those lives. If you give your self a small break, take a little pressure off, you might find that the next day, baking all those cookies isn’t so bad after all.
This may all seem oddly practical of advice for my normal deeper spiritual perspective. But lately I find the practical as mystical as the numinous moments in life. There is an odd magic in the workings of everyday life. And each of us is a part of that magic.
The bigger message here is not how you show up for holidays, whatever that may be for you. The bigger message is trusting who we are and how we are in any given moment. What if where you are right now, your energy levels, your desires, your habits are all a season in your life as useful as all of natures expressions? What if you truly can embrace where you are in all its beauty or messiness?
This doesn’t mean you don’t make changes, nature is change in constant motion. It means you stop resisting the change that is already occurring within this iteration of you. You create space in your mind to see what good can come of this season. This surrender is so powerful.
As you may know, I am one for surrender but also one for intentional cultivation. As we surrender to what is we also create space for cultivation. Every gardener knows you can not outwit the seasons but you can work with them to plant in such a way that you maximize what is possible.
Humans, as an aspect of nature, are here to flow with nature and to be a creator, forging the new by her ideas. This too is our natural state, surrendered and creatively intentional.
So I invite you today, to look at wherever you are not as a mere product of your environment and choices but as a fertile season for your souls journey. A moment that without it, you would miss something beautiful and nourishing that ultimately leads you further on your life path.
I invite you to stop saying this isn’t where I should be, or this isn’t right and say I am where I am meant to be for now, and I am creating where I go by my ability to take what is and make the most of it. You see, when you start embracing where life has you and looking for all the good there while looking forward to where you want to go, you will constantly get more and more good because you are always seeking it. Seek and ye shall find.
Even if what your embracing is sadness, or anger. It’s being with them and searching for what is possible there? What good lives in this season?
As this happens, you unfold.
May your days be merry and bright or blue or cold, or warm.
May they be.
